We are pleased to invite you to attend the Fourth National Meeting of Teacher-Training Colleges organized by the Profesorado de Inglés Instituto Juan Zorrilla de San Martín, to be held in the city of Cordoba on August 28 & 29, 2009.
This year we are concerned with looking into the Net generation – a new generation of students that appears to be characterised by ways of reasoning, constructing knowledge, approaching action and communicating that are essentially different from ours. Such a reality, mostly mediated by a technology that favours multiple forms of intelligence, calls for a forum where we can explore the profile of these new learners, try to understand the multimedia language they use and discuss the role of technological tools in today's classrooms. Teachers and teacher trainers face new challenges, those of finding teaching strategies and techniques that, using the students' natural ways of learning, will enhance the learning process.
It is our belief that institutions of higher education have a crucial role to play in reshaping learning environments with the fresh, creative thinking required to meet the demands of future generations of students in a changing world. Thus, we hope this Meeting of Teacher Training Colleges will be that forum where to show our interest in and commitment to teaching and learning once again.
Apart from having renowned specialists giving plenary talks, we will welcome the proposals for papers, workshops and poster presentations on the following topics:
ü Threads
A. The new learner profile
B. Teacher strategies
C. Technology-mediated learning
D. Materials design
A. The New Learner Profile
- What characteristics do our learners have?
- What are the similarities and differences with current and previous learner generations and learning styles?
- How do they make sense of the world around them? How do they learn?
- What thought processes and strategies do they use to access information?
- Have new skills and thought processes replaced traditional verbal reasoning? Should they?
- What communication styles do they respond to?
B. Teacher strategies
- What new challenges and demands do teachers meet nowadays in a technology-mediated society?
- How do and can teachers accommodate new ways of learning?
- What new teacher roles are appropriate?
- Can working with technology give teachers an insight into how their students learn?
- Is technology an indispensable tool in teaching?
C. Technology-mediated learning: Tools and resources
- What does current research say about the use of technological tools in education?
- Can learning become more efficient, equitable, innovative, and creative through using new technologies?
- Can technology promote self-regulated and self-directed learning?
- How can we teach with new technologies? Should we?
- How can technology fit in with what teachers already do?
- Are the strategies used in coping with learning in virtual environments the same as the ones needed in face-to-face lessons?
D. Materials design
- How can we best teach contents using technology?
- What materials can we adapt and/or design that exploit these technological tools?
- What topics and contents suit computer-based approaches to teaching and learning?
- How can we evaluate the outcomes of technology-mediated or technology-based learning?
